Meninos de Luz Theater hosts Concert in honor of Chiquinha Gonzaga
To celebrate the launch of composer Chiquinha Gonzaga’s Digital Collection, Solar Meninos de Luz was the setting for a great choro concert with teachers and composers from the Escola Portátil de Música (EPM) music school, on Monday, the 17th of October. They performed at the Meninos de Luz Theater, with special arrangements created for the occasion.
Apart from Rio de Janeiro, there are recitals in Brasília and in São Paulo, all open to the public. At the Meninos de Luz Theater, the teachers at EPM (a recent Solar partnership, which offers cavaquinho, guitar, pandeiro and musical appreciation workshops to our students), performed this musical concert on Chiquinha Gonzaga’s birthday.
With the inauguration of the Musical Collection, the public and the entire musical community in Brazil and the world will have access to more than 300 musical scores that have been reviewed and digitalized, available on the new site www.chiquinhagonzaga.com.br. The official launch was on the 18th of October, at Instituto Moreira Salles, for the press and guests.
Chiquinha Gonzaga was a composer, instrumentalist and conductor. She was the greatest female figure in the history of Brazilian popular music; the first female maestro, the author of the first Carnaval song, the first choro pianist, the artist who brought popular music to elegant living rooms and the founder of the first society to protect copyright.
We had illustrious presences such as Mauricio Carrilho, Paulo Aragão, Luiz Flávio Alcofra and Lucas Porto on the guitars; Jayme Vignoli and Luciana Rabello on the cavaquinhos; Pedro Aragão and Marcílio Lopes on the mandolins; Antonio Rocha on the flute, Rui Alvim on the alto sax, Pedro Paes on the clarinet, Denize Rodrigues on the tenor sax, Aquiles Moraes on the trumpet, Thiago Osório on the tuba, and Marcus Thadeu and Magno Júlio on percussion.
