Solar Meninos de Luz

On Sunday, March 6, more than 200 students went to Ipanema streets, together with their parents and teachers, in order to save their School in financial difficulties. The march began at 10 o’clock on the corner of Vieira Souto Avenue and Gomes Carneiro Street and continued to Jardim de Alah square. Students carried banners and posters produced in class, sensitizing population to contribute a minimum of R$30,00 monthly through ‘Padrinho de Coração’ (Heart Godfather) program, at internet.

Solar Meninos de Luz, which serves 400 children full-time, from Nursery to High School – the child remains 18 years in the institution, with 3 daily meals and more than 20 workshops in the cultural, sports and educational areas, as well as health care – runs the risk of closing the doors after 33 years of service to Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo communities, in Copacabana.

The financial crisis hit the not-for-profit organization with the untimely departure of major social investors earlier this year, which left a deficit of R$100.000 per month, making it harder to pay its more than 100 employees, mostly teachers. Solar believes in Heart Godfathers; Individuals who donate a monthly amount to help the sustainability of the work carried out, independent of the government, which only participates with 5% of the expenses.

100% of the students graduated at the social organization have graduated or are attending universities, with scholarships, and in good jobs. More than 18 students exchanged abroad.
