On the afternoon of Friday, the 7th of October, we opened the Tarsila do Amaral Reinterpretation Project exhibition at the Meninos de Luz Art Gallery. Students from Primary School I created true works of art that will be on display during the whole month of October. Since the 5th of September, the educators and children from the 1st to 5th years of Primary School have been working on this theme, which aims to explore the life and work of artist Tarsila do Amaral, as well as her work in other fields beyond fine arts, in order to understand her importance for Brazilians.

Pedagogic director Rosemarie Ramalho believes this cultural incentive helps to develop students’ perceptions of beauty, bringing them closer to art through the observation of shapes, colors and lines and the knowledge of artists’ biographies. Another goal is to encourage the educators involved in the project to research and study. “The idea for the project came out of the reinterpretation work performed by the 5th year and, with the possibility of another exhibition at the Solar Art Gallery, we decided to expand the activity”, Rose explained.

The students were able to understand that reinterpretation is not simply copying but another form of expression, using the artist’s work as inspiration. They also saw that reinterpretation doesn’t only apply to paintings. “Other techniques and materials can be used to create drawings, sculptures, etc”, the pedagogic director stressed.

It is extremely important that all students learn about Tarsila do Amaral’s life, talk amongst themselves and ask questions, but this type of activity only succeeds if the teacher is also involved and well-informed. It is essential that children observe and express what they think and feel, thus stimulating their creativity and critical sense. “This way, I believe this type of activity can reach students, especially, and also parents, guardians, the family and community”, she concluded.
